How did you discover collage?

When I was a teenager, I used to enjoy cutting out magazine images that I found beautiful and/or striking. Eventually, I instinctively began placing them in juxtaposition from each other, but it took me a long time before I dared to glue them together.

What do you like about the collage medium?

I like that it allows me to overcome the limits of my drawing and painting skills, and that it lets me create images and compositions that I enjoy.

How do you describe your style?

Minimalist (I often use a maximum of 3 or 4 items) and I don’t really mix media.

In one word, what makes you unique?

Self portraits

Where do you find your collage material? What are your favorite magazines?

I particularly enjoy cutting up books of black and white photographs. I often find them in thrift stores, but I sometimes get them new and on sale. I often use images from contemporary art magazines, like Artforum, Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose, as backgrounds.

Any advice for a newcomer collagist?

You have to dare jump into without judgement because it can take many tries to discover what you have to say. The only way to do collage is to collage.
