ARTIST OF THE MONTH OF AUGUST

Pierre-Richard

Montreal

How did you discover collage?

When I was studying in France I liked to watch the poster artists in the Parisian metro. With their buckets of glue and their big brushes, they tore off and glued on new flyers and posters. I’d then pick up the fragments of posters, thicknesses of posters, and made beautiful discoveries of old posters. Also, museums, exhibitions, and books on the Dadaism movement.

What did you like about the collage medium?

The infinite possibilities, superposition, and the freedom of expression through existing matter, as well as the use of all kinds of recovered elements and giving them a new vision.

How would you describe your style?

Heteroclite-electric indefinite figurative abstract, in fact a non-style.

In one word, what makes you unique?

Chaos

Where do you find you collage material? What are your favorite magazines?

Everywhere! Everything is usable: books, magazines, labels, bags, stationery etc

Any advice for a newcomer collagist?

Observation, it’s all about observing what surrounds us on a daily basis.
